1820 New Orleans Slave Tax receipt...No Reserve!
A remnant from a dark part of American history. Written in French (as most documents in early 1800's New Orleans were). Measures 3"x6". Taxes were paid in piastres or dollars. 1/4 piastrie/dollar per slave held was collected annually. By 1825 the annual rate had risen to or 1 piastrie per slave held. The number of slaves were listed on the back of the invoice, sometimes with their names.
