Description
1832 Manuscript Promissory Note for 00 –United States Bank at Natchez, MS
Offered for your consideration is a manuscript promissory note, issued for a substantial sum (for the period), payable at a bank in Mississippi. Headlined “
Natchez March 4
th
1832
” and issued for “
1100$
”, the body of this document states that “
On the first day of February next I promise to pay to the order of William L. Davis, Eleven hundred Dollars, negotiable and payable at the Branch of the United States Bank at Natchez.
”. It is signed at the conclusion by “
Jefferson Montgomery
”, though this has been struck through, presumably on payment of the debt. The word “
Paid
” is penned vertically at the center. The back bears several notations, probably for filing, as the top one recaps the contents of the front. This is followed by the signature of “
Wm. L. Davis
”, as well as “
A Fisk Burke & Co.
” (also struck through) and “
Calvin Smith
”. An additional notation reads “
Voucher to A. Fisk
/
Burke Co.
(?)”, the significance of which is unknown to the seller. Sadly, there is no clue to the nature of this high value transaction on the document, though with research, it may be possible to discover a broader story (what does A Fisk Burke & Co sell). One also has to wonder what form of payment was received for this debt (gold coins, maybe). Worthy of further research.
The presently offered document exhibits signs of expected period use, followed by many years of less than ideal storage. Toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to the paper a beige or light tan hue. This toning is somewhat darker at the edges and along the folds, especially on the back, which would have been the outside when the piece was folded for storage. Numerous scattered stains, as well as ink smears and transfer are also noted for accuracy. The aforementioned folds, in addition to associated wrinkling, has affected the integrity of the paper, leading to several tears, especially at the edges (these could be strengthened with archival tape, if desired). The edges are slightly irregular, the lower edge being somewhat more pronounced. Some of the text appears to be slightly faded, though only a few letters are missing (it can be difficult to read, however, due to the penmanship of the author). This unusual document measures approximately 4¼ x 8 inches and would make a great addition to any Mississippi or early financial document collection.
