    1862 vintage real patent # 35957 filed July 22, 1862 by "O.C. SMITH" for "IRON CLAD" to be put on Civil War ships.
    The patent is photo-lithographed on heavy paper.  During this era of the patent office, only a few lithographed copies of each patent were made to file in the classification drawers and a few to sell to the public.  The pages are still attached at the bottom with the original staples. The pages measure 8.25 x 11.75 inches.  They have been in the collection of the U.S. Patent Office either in the examiner search room of the public search room, so they show signs of use.
