    Description

For bid is an original March 24, 1870 "State of Louisiana" marriage certificate document signed by Reverend DANIEL SMITH LEWIS (1811-) of Calvary Church of New Orleans.  The original Victorian marriage certificate of Samuel McGlauphlin and Maria Chin.  Married at Calvary Church.  Signed by the bride, groom and three witnesses to the marriage.  Wonderful, Victorian document with lovely borders.  Folded several times and a few small tears along the fold lines.  Document measures 8 1/2 inches tall.
Daniel Smith Lewis (1811-) was a noted Louisiana Episcopalian clergyman who attended Amherst College and I believe graduated from Union College later in the 1830's.
This is a lovely document from the "State of Louisiana" from the wedding of a couple in the spring of 1870.  Samuel McGlauphlin's name comes up on a list of slaveowners in Louisiana.  I don't know much else about him...
