    Description

1878 Alamo Iron Works Receipt To Menger Hotel San Antonio Tx George Holmgreen.
This 1878 beautifully handwritten receipt is for work done by Alamo Iron Works for the Menger Hotel. They worked on altering the balcony railing, charged for 3 hours of work in the kitchen and supplied plates for the stove. The receipt is sign by Elmendorf.
Alamo Iron Works was established by George Holmgreen in 1875 as a blacksmith shop. Alamo Iron Works was not always located where the Alamodome is today. It was also on Presa Street near the Casino Building. AIW is still in business.
George Friedrich Eduard Holmgreen (1822-1899) was born in Berlin, Germany. He was born to Jens Englebrecht Holmgreen and Koenke Margaretha Fruend. George married Bertha Koehler, who was also born in Berlin. They were parents to four sons: Julius, Richard, Eugene and Alfred. The first three sons were born in Louisiana and Alfred was born in Florida. Some accounts say they had five children.
Alamo Iron Works is certainly one of the pillars of the pioneer San Antonio business community…along with Joske’s and Alamo Cement.
