1881 Legal Bexar County Texas Mary Menger John Fraser P. H. Ward P. Shields. This 1881 Bexar County, Texas, legal document is a declaration that an 1879 promissory note made by Mary Menger, widow of William Menger, owner of the Menger Hotel and Western Brewery, is paid in full. Signatures on the document are those of John A. Fraser, P. H. Ward, P. Shields and Bexar County Deputy Clerk Thad Smith.
John Augustus Fraser (1849-1932) worked at the San Antonio National Bank. He was married to Zelime Susan Tobin (1855-1911). They had at least 8 children and are buried in San Antonio City Cemetery #1.
P. H. Ward (1843-1889) was born in Ireland. He was an attorney and judge. See obituary from “Brenham Daily Banner” 2/2/1889.
Peter Shields was a local attorney, judge, notary and politician. We cannot find his grave nor obituary. We did find an interesting article from the “San Antonio Light” 11/12/1884, discussing Shields presiding at the inquest of the death of District Attorney Willis Wallace of Castroville.
Thaddeus W. Smith (1857-1930) was the son of longtime Bexar County Clerk, Samuel Smith (1810-1882). Thad served as his father’s chief deputy for 20 years before being elected himself. He served in the Bexar County courthouse for over 50 years. Thad boasted all his life that he “never smoked, drank alcohol, shaved his beard nor used profanity.” The day of his funeral, the courthouse closed from 3-4 o’clock in his memory. Thad is buried in San Fernando Cemetery #1.
