    Description

An almost square ceremonial cloth, called fukusa, in silk jacquard weave with gold thread and colored silk threads.
On the front, inside a hexagonal, the old couple Jo and Uba are standing near the old pines of the island Takasago. Jo hold a rake, Uba holds a broom. They gather pine needles. A pair of cranes is flying above the hexagonal, between golden clouds.
On the reverse is a family crest woven in gold thread.
Golden tassels on the four corners.
Japan, probably Taisho or Showa era, 1920s-1940s.
    L 22.25 x W 20 in.
Folds from long storage, otherwise excellent condition.
Jo and Uba, the island Takasago with the pines and cranes are all symbols of longevity. Thus the fukusa will be used to give the occasion an auspicious aura.
