    Description

A futon cover we picked up in Kyoto. It's from the late 1800's - early 1900's when indigo dye was made from plant indigo. (Before chemical indigo was invented.) The irregular cotton weave and stitching shows this was handwoven / handmade.
Notice the difference in materials on the front and back. There are two layers of indigo material on this futon cover. The back side, photos 6 - 11, still show some of the original kapok (Mawata in Japanese) used for insulation in the futon
There are some patches and i
t's in very good condition with a couple of obvious tears at some of the stitching. The white areas are cotton patches. They're the same handmade cotton material just not indigo dyed.
    It's a large 62 1/2 x 37 inches (159 x 94 cm) and weighs 1 pound
We have other indigo cloth listed also. (We're selling our personal collection)
