    Description

Wernher von Braun [1912 1977] was a prominent German aerospace engineer and space architect credited with inventing the V-2 Rocket during World War II and the Saturn V for the United States space program. Braun was a leading figure in the development of rocket technology in Germany where he was a member of the Nazi Party. Braun was one of hundreds of German scientists, technicians and engineers who were moved to the United States following the end of World War II as part of Operation Paperclip. Braun arrived at NASA and eventually served as the director of the newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center and was the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle and is referred to as the ''Father of Rocket Science''. Listed for auction is an attractive display which contains an authenticated autograph of Wernher von Braun. The autograph is signed on a First Day Issue postal cover which is postmarked Cape Canaveral, FLA, Feb 20, 1962, and is affixed with one [1] U.S commemorative postage stamp which commemorates Project Mercury. The autograph is signed ''Wernher von Braun'' in blue felt pen and it is bold and displays wonderfully. The cover measures 6.50 x 3.50 inches and is in fine condition. The autograph has been authenticated by Zarelli Space Authentication and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. The display will also be accompanied with a letter dated 5/5/64 addressed from Wernher von Braun secretary acknowledging the forwarding of the autographed cover. The display is centered around an attractive color [7.00 x 8.00] photograph of Wernher von Braun at his desk with the various rockets he designed. Mounted to the right is the autographed cover as described above and below is a professionally engraved metal plaque which reads as follows, ''Wernher von Braun ''The Father of Rocket Technology'' March 23, 1912 - June 16, 1977. Wernher von Braun worked in Nazi Germany's rocket development program. He helped design and develop the V-2 rocket during World War II. Following the war, he was secretly moved to the United States for Operation Paperclip. He worked for the United States Army on an intermediate-range ballistic missile [1RBM] program, and he developed the rockets that launched the United States first space satellite Explorer1. His group was assimilated into NASA, where he served as the chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon''. The display is very attractive and has been professionally assembled with great attention to detail as follows. Each item within the display has been triple matted in a grey linen outer matte and accented with a burgundy and black inner matte. The display has been assembled in a quality ornate cherry wood fame to the dimensions of 20.00 x 14.00 inches.
