WERNHER VON BRAUN - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 08/18/1959 - HFSID 28254
WERNHER VON BRAUN
He signed this typed letter to a Hollywood agent in 1959, stressing that he does
not
want a movie script about him turned into a book because "the script writers have taken too many liberties with the historical facts."
Typed Letter signed:
"Wernher"
, 1 page, 8x10½.
Huntsville, Alabama, 1959 August 19.
On personal letterhead to Ned Brown/MCA Artists Ltd./Beverly Hills, California.
In full:
"Thanks for your letter of August 6th. I do no think we should take up Myron Boardman's suggestion about a book publishing deal on Columbia's movie script. In fact,
I am actually interested that this script does not appear in book form for the simple reason that the script writers have taken too many liberties with the historical facts. While in a motion picture this kind of think seems to be acceptable and is not too serious, it would be quite different if such a story appears in book form.
I don't want to interfere in any way with any future plans I might have to write an autobiography, and if any biographical sketch or what might be accepted for one has appeared in print previously, such an autobiography would be difficult to write. For all these reasons I would, therefore, suggest that you turn down any request on the part of Columbia to extend their 750-word bits which we granted them for publicity purposes into full fledged book form. I just feel we shouldn't do this, period. Our little discussions about the question of Mr. Schneer's obligations to pay Mr. Wiesman for his services in Munich seem to have started quite a stir with Schneer. I shall see him in Munich shortly and I expect to arrive at some kind of a compromise formula with him. After all, Wiesman helps him just as much as he helps me. So rather than talking about the legal situation, it will probably be smarter to have some kind of a gentleman's agreement. It was nice to see you again. Cordially".
Wernher von Braun (1912-1977) has been called the pre-eminent rocket scientist of the 20th century
. At Peenemunde on the Baltic, Braun headed the German team which
developed the V-2 rocket
. He joined the Nazi Party and became an officer of the Waffen-SS, though controversy continues about whether he was compelled or did so voluntarily.
Surrendering to the West
with most of his rocket team at the end of World War II, von Braun was brought to the US, but spent a frustrating decade working on medium range rockets and responding to questions about his past while the US ignored the potential of space flight, von Braun's dream. The Soviet space satellite Sputnik changed all that, and
von Braun went to work for the newly formed NASA in 1958, working to design the Saturn rocket which would take US astronauts to the moon in 1969.
The bio-film references in this letter was
I Aim for the Stars
(1960).
Comedian Mort Sahl suggested as a subtitle, "But Sometimes I Hit London". Considering the controversies about von Braun's life, it is hardly surprising that he did not want to sanction an unauthorized biography. Horizontal and vertical folds. Red pencil marks at center of printed header. Three filing holes at left margin. Four filing holes at center top margin. Staple holes at top left corner. Lightly creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
