This item includes a postcard originally signed by
Yuri Gagarin
(1934-1968) and
Gherman Titov
(1935-2000)
, both Russian Soviet cosmonauts.
Gagarin
was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961. He became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation's highest honor
.
Titov
became the second human to orbit the Earth, aboard Vostok 2.
He was the first person to orbit the Earth multiple times (a total of 17), to spend more than a day in space, to sleep in orbit. He was the first to pilot a spaceship personally and he made the first manual photographs from orbit,
Gagarin has signed the stamp, and Titov has signed the postcard.
Provenance:
This item comes from the estate of Mr. Toivo Karvonen (1906-1988), a long time Chairman of the Friendship Association of Finland & The Soviet Union. He served the Association for almost 25 years and visited Soviet Union more than a hundred times during that period. He had a close relationship to Soviet politicians and cultural persons.
These autographs were obtained in person by him during one of his visits to the Soviet Union in the the 1960's. I'm selling here also some other cosmonaut items from his collection.
